ECF China Unconventional Week Report - June 27 2026

Guizhou Advances Gas and Carbon Projects

Guizhou’s Coalbed Methane and Shale Gas Engineering Technology Research Center has secured approval for two 2026 provincial technology support projects. The first will assess CO₂ geological storage potential and suitability in goaf areas of the Panjiang mining district, building an evaluation system for complex coalfield conditions in Southwest China. The second will develop integrated technologies for coal mine gas drainage, purification and utilization, targeting challenges in multiple thin coal seams. By improving carbon storage assessment and methane recovery, the projects are expected to support unconventional gas development, coal mine safety, clean energy use and low-carbon transformation in Guizhou.

CNPC Sets Expandable Tubing Record

CNPC’s expandable tubing engineering technology innovation team has completed the world’s first 16-inch ultra-large-diameter monobore expandable tubing operation in Abu Dhabi. The team successfully ran 635 feet of tubing in one operation, setting a world record for the longest single monobore expandable tubing job. The technology was applied in an ADNOC UM well, where severe wellbore collapse in loose sandstone made conventional drilling ineffective. After extensive international technical evaluation, CNPC’s solution won due to reliability and cost advantages. The success demonstrates China’s independent capabilities in materials, tool design and field operations, strengthening its competitiveness in global high-end drilling markets.

Sinopec Wins Yanchang Logging Contract

Sinopec Matrix’s Shengli Geological Logging Company has won the logging technology service contract for Yanchang Petroleum’s YM1 well in Shaanxi, setting a new record for the company’s highest single-well logging contract value in China’s external market. The project, the first implemented cooperation between Sinopec and Yanchang Petroleum, covers conventional geological logging as well as core NMR scanning and real-time remote data transmission. Facing complex geology and strict technical requirements, Shengli Geological Logging stood out with its deep-well experience, advanced logging technologies and integrated on-site and remote expert support, further expanding Sinopec’s external technical service market.
