ECF China Unconventional Week Report - April 4, 2026
Barite Boosts Energy Security Xi’an Research Institute achieved another milestone in coalbed methane (CBM) development at Anhui Shenyuan Coal Chemical, with a horizontal well producing over 10,000 cubic meters of gas per day. This marks the third such high-yield well in the Huaihe mining region, following a previous record in 2025. Facing challenges of soft, low-permeability coal seams, the institute introduced segmented fracturing horizontal well technology, integrating precise drilling, geosteering, and intelligent drainage systems. This innovation solved key extraction difficulties and enabled stable high production. The “six-in-one” technical model has been widely applied, supporting safer mining, cleaner energy utilization, and China’s carbon reduction goals.
CBM Output Hits New High On March 20, drilling officially began at Ziyuan-1, the first well in the Pingshan oil and gas block in Sichuan, marking a key step toward building Sichuan into a national clean energy demonstration province and supporting a billion-cubic-meter gas capacity base in the Sichuan-Chongqing region. Covering 594.24 square kilometers, the block holds an estimated 329.966 billion cubic meters of mainly unconventional gas resources, including shale gas. The project aims to achieve initial gas flow by the end of this year and reach annual output of 1.5 billion cubic meters by 2033, while advancing an AI-enabled smart gas field development model.
Breakthrough in Deepwell Packer Tarim Oilfield has successfully developed a high-temperature, high-pressure V0-grade gas production packer, marking a major breakthrough in China’s ultra-deep well technology. Designed for extreme conditions in the Tarim Basin, the packer withstands up to 232°C and 105 MPa, surpassing previous limits and replacing imported products. It also features retrievability, reducing operational costs by over 60%. Since 2026, it has been applied in five wells, saving over 3.16 million yuan. This achievement, driven by a collaborative innovation mechanism, strengthens domestic capabilities in advanced downhole tools and supports efficient large-scale development of ultra-deep gas reservoirs.
