Yanchang Petroleum and CNPC Logging Institute Discuss CBM Evaluation

On the morning of March 4, 2026, focusing on technical challenges such as coalbed methane (CBM) reservoir evaluation, the Natural Gas Research Institute of Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum (Group) Co., Ltd. held a technical exchange with the Geological Research Institute of CNPC Logging. Zhao Weibo, deputy director of the Natural Gas Research Institute, led the CBM taskforce in discussions with Wan Jinbin, Party secretary of the CNPC Logging Geological Research Institute, and his delegation on the advanced application of logging technologies in the CBM sector.

During the meeting, the CNPC Logging team shared practical cases of using logging data—including electrical imaging and nuclear magnetic resonance—to identify coal structure, calculate gas content, and evaluate reservoir brittleness. Both sides discussed logging response characteristics of reservoirs with different coal ranks, geomechanical evaluation under logging constraints, and optimization of fracturing parameters.

The participants also explored how logging interpretation results could assist in optimizing perforation placement and fracturing scale design, enabling effective integration between geological understanding and engineering operations.

The technical exchange was conducted in a pragmatic and productive atmosphere, laying a solid foundation for future cooperation. Both sides agreed to leverage their respective strengths and establish a regular communication mechanism to jointly promote reserves growth and production increases in unconventional natural gas resources.
