Xinjiang Boosts Geological Exploration

On January 22, the Xinjiang Department of Natural Resources announced that in 2026 the regional government will invest 1.542 billion yuan to implement 211 geological exploration projects, a 68.1% increase from 2025. The projects include 40 basic geological surveys, 160 metal and non-metal mineral exploration projects, and 11 energy mineral projects, covering oil and gas, iron, manganese, copper, gold, high-purity quartz, zircon, and other key resources. The initiative aims to enhance geological work, expand resource reserves, provide high-quality mining blocks, and strengthen resource support for Xinjiang’s high-quality development and national energy security.

Ordos Auctions CBM Rights

On January 26, three coalbed methane (CBM) exploration rights in Hangjin Banner, Ordos—Wujiamiao Block I, Wujiamiao Block II, and Yihewusu—were successfully auctioned for a total bid of 98 million yuan after competitive bidding by three different enterprises. Covering 855.94 square kilometers, these blocks represent Ordos’ first batch of CBM exploration rights allocated through market-based transactions. The public listing process improved transparency and matched resource allocation with market demand, boosting development efficiency. The move supports Inner Mongolia’s push to expand CBM exploration and integrates resource development with local economic growth.

Henan Energy Plans CBM Development

On January 22, Henan Energy Group held a planning meeting in Zhengzhou on coalbed methane (CBM) and coal mine gas development and utilization. Group executives emphasized that CBM development is essential for major mine disaster prevention, energy security, and green, low-carbon transformation. The group will adopt site-specific strategies based on geological conditions, promote integrated gas drainage and utilization, and advance innovation-driven, efficient implementation. Measures include strengthening top-level planning, accelerating technological R&D, improving institutional mechanisms, and seeking stronger policy support to cultivate new growth drivers and support high-quality development.
