On December 19, the unveiling ceremony of the Academician Yang Shufeng Workstation was held at PetroChina Tarim Oilfield Company, marking the establishment of the first academicians’ workstation in Bayingolin Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture at Tarim Oilfield.

The team led by Academician Yang Shufeng is a benchmark force in China’s geoscience community and has long been dedicated to research in structural geology, significantly enriching theories of petrology and plate tectonics with a series of systematic and innovative achievements. In particular, the discovery of an Early Permian large igneous province within the Tarim Plate has provided critical theoretical support for understanding the deep structure and hydrocarbon evolution of the Tarim Basin, and for promoting major breakthroughs in Paleozoic exploration in southwestern Tarim.

Tarim Oilfield is the largest oil and gas producer in Xinjiang and China’s largest ultra-deep oil and gas production base, with proven ultra-deep reserves accounting for three-quarters of the national total. At present, exploration and development at Tarim Oilfield have fully entered the stage of ultra-deep and highly complex domains, facing a series of world-class exploration and development challenges. The establishment of the Academician Yang Shufeng Workstation is of great significance for building an open and innovative ecosystem, leveraging the advantages of integrated industry–academia–research–application collaboration, deepening fundamental basin research, and addressing key technical challenges in deep oil and gas exploration and development in the Tarim Basin.

Yang Shufeng stated that following the establishment of the workstation, efforts will focus on four key orientations—joint research, flexible talent introduction, resource support acquisition, and talent cultivation—to accelerate organizational, institutional, and task implementation, and to drive more “from zero to one” breakthroughs in scientific and technological innovation.
