Sinopec Jiangsu Oilfield Launches AI+ Action Team to Drive Smart Oilfield Development

On April 24, Sinopec’s Jiangsu Oilfield convened a leadership meeting of its newly formed "AI+" Action Innovation Team, aimed at fully implementing President Xi Jinping's guidance on accelerating AI development. The meeting also followed the strategic deployment of the Sinopec Group and the oilfield party committee to advance AI integration and ensure tangible results.

Zhong Zhiguo, Executive Director and Party Secretary of Jiangsu Petroleum Exploration Bureau Co., Ltd., emphasized the need to leverage AI to empower high-quality development in the oilfield and to accelerate progress on the digital transformation track. Oilfield leaders He Yun, Xu Qing, and Zhu Xiangyu attended the meeting, which was held via video conference with participation from 100 AI team members.

PART.01: AI Team Sounds the Call to Action

This was the first official gathering of the Jiangsu Oilfield AI team, signaling a full-speed push to integrate AI into core oilfield operations. He Yun, Vice General Manager of the branch, conveyed the spirit of Sinopec Group’s AI leadership meeting, while the Technology and Information Management Department read the announcement on the team’s formation.

The AI initiative is a strategic effort mobilizing resources across the oilfield. The "AI+" Action Innovation Team consists of a leadership group, an expert group, and five specialized task forces. Zhong Zhiguo serves as head of the leadership team, and He Yun leads the expert group.

The five task forces are each focused on a critical area for AI-driven transformation:

  1. AI in Geophysical Exploration

  2. AI in Digital Business Decision-Making

  3. AI in Oil Well Lifting Systems and Water Injection Maintenance Optimization

  4. AI in Integrated Communication Systems

  5. AI in Scientific Research Support

PART.02: Application Plans and Strategic Goals

Each team presented its application scenario, development roadmap, and implementation targets, aligned with the oilfield’s strategic goals of intelligent exploration, digital operations, and scientific management.

1. AI + Research

  • Leader: Guo Tingchao

  • Mission: Use AI to strengthen geophysical technologies.

  • Focus: Deep learning for seismic velocity analysis, noise suppression, hydrocarbon detection using AI models.

  • Goals: Achieve >90% accuracy in velocity analysis, 10x efficiency gains, 15% accuracy improvement in first-arrival picking.

2. AI + Business

  • Leader: Xie Hua

  • Mission: Smart decision support for lean management.

  • Focus: Intelligent platforms for budgeting and petroleum engineering estimation.

  • Goals: Enable intelligent budgeting, forecasting, and audit processes.

3. AI + Production

  • Leader: Kang Chengrui

  • Mission: Equip every well with an AI brain.

  • Focus: Data-driven pump lift optimization, condition diagnosis, water injection maintenance planning.

  • Goals: Detect anomalies >90%, extend maintenance cycles, reduce energy and costs.

4. AI + Support

  • Leader: Xia Jiabin

  • Mission: Smart communications infrastructure.

  • Focus: Develop integrated hardware-software platforms and virtual assistants.

  • Goals: Boost efficiency and reduce management overhead.

5. AI + Services

  • Leader: Zhu Suqing

  • Mission: Smart science, future innovation.

  • Focus: Build AI application hub, integrate internal R&D data and external academic resources.

  • Goals: Launch an AI assistant “Smart Research Assistant” to automate scientific intelligence tasks.

PART.03: Accelerating Smart Oilfield Construction

Zhong Zhiguo praised the detailed planning and clear implementation steps of all five groups, as well as the oilfield’s enthusiastic embrace of AI in 2024. He emphasized the importance of AI in securing China's energy future, addressing development bottlenecks, and cultivating new productive forces.

He called for:

  • Focusing on high-value scenarios to unleash AI’s full potential.

  • Advancing mature applications while fostering scenario interconnectivity.

  • Building high-quality datasets as the bedrock for AI growth.

  • Nurturing compound “business + AI” talent for long-term success.

Zhong stressed the need for a strong leadership role from the innovation team—deepening learning, optimizing collaboration, and setting a benchmark for smart development.

He Yun, who chaired the meeting, concluded by urging all groups to:

  • Coordinate business and management tasks;

  • Keep pace with technological advancements;

  • Deliver practical results that inject new vitality into the oilfield’s high-quality development.
