Highlighting Regional Leadership in Unconventional Resources and Low-Carbon Innovation

The Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP) and the Shanghai United Institute for Unconventional Resources (SUI) today announced the official results of the 10th ECF Energy Technology Innovation Award, presented on 22 October during the Energy China Forum 2025 in Shanghai.

Established in 2016 and filed with China’s National Office for Science and Technology Awards (NOSTA) since 2023, the Award has become an important regional mechanism for recognizing excellence in unconventional resources, CCUS, geothermal and hydrogen systems, underground storage, and intelligent subsurface engineering. Over the past decade, it has helped advance the region’s goals for energy security, resilience, and decarbonization.

The 2025 submissions reflect the Asia-Pacific region’s evolving priorities, combining enhanced resource supply with low-carbon and digital transformation. According to the Expert Committee, this year’s entries demonstrated notable progress in frontier technologies, large-scale engineering deployment, and AI-enabled, low-carbon solutions.

Advances in deep and ultra-deep well logging, drilling risk mitigation, reservoir stimulation materials, electrochemical storage, and multimodal intelligent sensing highlight the region’s growing capacity for original innovation. Several award-winning technologies have already achieved industrial-scale application across shale oil, shale gas, and deep coalbed methane fields, improving productivity, efficiency, and operational safety. The Expert Committee noted that the overall quality of the 2025 achievements reached internationally advanced levels, with several projects achieving international leading performance.

As the Award enters its second decade, CCOP and SUI reaffirm their commitment to strengthening regional cooperation in science, technology, and policy. Priority areas include unconventional resources, CCUS, hydrogen, geothermal systems, youth innovation, and accelerated technology demonstration—toward a more integrated, intelligent, and low-carbon energy ecosystem across the Asia-Pacific.
