AI Boosts Subsurface Insight

In July 2025, BGP's Research Institute launched three AI-powered technologies to enhance subsurface oil and gas exploration. These include:

AI + Intelligent Interpretation for faster fault identification,

AI + Sedimentary Facies Interpretation for improved reservoir prediction,

AI + Reservoir Forecasting for accurate resource estimation.

By integrating advanced modeling and data analysis, the institute marks a key step toward smarter and more efficient exploration.

First Million-Ton Non-Miscible CCUS Hub

In July 2025, PetroChina’s Daqing Oilfield officially launched China’s first million-ton-class non-miscible CCUS full-industry-chain demonstration hub. The project includes CO₂-EOR injection, capture, and transport systems, providing a scalable and replicable model for low-carbon oil production.

The liquid CO₂ injection station there, completed in just 113 days, features an 800-ton/day injection capacity and has already stored 79,000 tons of CO₂. Advanced “gas-liquid dynamic control” and dual-flow separation systems ensure safety and stability across the transport network.

First Shale oilfield in Sichuan Basin

On July 31, 2025, the report confirming 20.10 million tons of shale oil and 12.35 bcm of gas in recoverable geological reserves at the Fuxing Oilfield in Sichuan Basin is approved by the Ministry of Natural Resources—marking the birth of China’s first shale oilfield in the region.

This breakthrough signifies Sichuan Basin’s transition from a “gas-rich, oil-poor” profile to realizing “oil and gas co-exploration.” It also establishes a key foundation for deep shale oil development and energy security in southwestern China.
