China Promotes AI Cooperation at UN Side Event

On May 6, China’s Permanent Mission to the UN, Zambia’s Mission, and the China Association for Science and Technology co-hosted a side event in New York titled “From Gap to Synergy: A Global Framework for AI Capacity-Building Cooperation.” Over 100 representatives from 70+ countries and international organizations attended. Academician Liu He of the Chinese Academy of Engineering presented China's advancements in AI applications within petroleum exploration, digital oilfields, and smart pipelines. Liu also met UN tech officials and spoke at the 10th UN STI Forum, promoting global AI collaboration and digital transformation in the energy sector.

Exploration & Production

Sinopec Sets New Record in Deep Shale Gas Drilling

On May 13, Sinopec’s “Deep Earth Project” achieved a significant breakthrough as the Tiebei 1-HF side well in the Sichuan Basin recorded a high-yield industrial gas flow of 314,500 m³/day. With a vertical depth exceeding 5,300 meters and a horizontal section of 1,312 meters, the well set a new national depth record for shale gas drilling. This milestone advances ultra-deep shale gas exploration in the Puguang region. Using self-developed 175MPa ultra-high-pressure fracturing equipment, Sinopec created complex artificial gas pathways underground. The success supports China’s energy security and the high-quality development of its shale gas industry.

Tarim Oilfield Surpasses 550M Tons of Oil-Gas Output

As of May 6, Tarim Oilfield, China’s largest ultra-deep oil and gas base, has produced 172 million tons of oil and 473.7 billion cubic meters of gas—over 550 million tons of oil and gas equivalent. Located in the challenging Tarim Basin, the field overcame extreme “three ultra and one high” conditions (ultra-deep, high-temp, high-pressure, high-sulfur) through continuous innovation. With 193 wells over 8,000 meters deep and key discoveries like Fuman and Bozi-Dabei, it now accounts for three-fourths of China’s ultra-deep reserves. It also pioneers CCUS and solar energy integration, offering a “Tarim Solution” for clean, low-carbon energy.

Technology & Equipment

Jereh Showcases AI-Powered Frac Tech at 2025 Oil Equipment Expo

From May 12–14, the 2025 4th Petroleum & Petrochemical Equipment Technology Conference was held in Xi’an, co-hosted by CNPC and the Petroleum & Petrochemical Equipment Industry Association. Jereh, a leader in intelligent oilfield equipment, debuted cutting-edge technologies including the AI·R FRAC smart fracturing system, intelligent coiled tubing, and integrated power supply solutions. The AI·R FRAC system, already deployed in major oilfields, features millisecond-level response, 45% operational efficiency gains, and over 800 days of accident-free performance. Jereh also introduced its next-gen smart coiled tubing with real-time defect detection, reinforcing its role in the AI-driven transformation of the oil and gas sector.

Sinopec Oilfield Service and JJC Forge Strategic Alliance

On May 12, Sinopec Oilfield Service Corporation (SSC) and Beijing JJC Technology Co., Ltd. signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Beijing, marking a new phase in their partnership. SSC General Manager Zhang Jiankuo praised JJC's innovative R&D achievements, while JJC Chairman Li Xuejun emphasized the platform this collaboration offers for deeper cooperation. The agreement outlines joint efforts in smart drilling equipment, tackling complex formations, and co-developing internationally competitive oilfield technologies. Both parties aim to drive digital upgrades and strengthen China’s energy security through technological innovation.
