Key Lab for Deep CBM Development Approved in Inner Mongolia

Recently, the Department of Science and Technology of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region issued a notice on the establishment and layout of key laboratories in the region. The "Key Laboratory for Deep Coalbed Methane (CBM) Accumulation Mechanisms and Efficient Development" (hereinafter referred to as the Key Laboratory), led by the Ordos Energy Research Institute of Peking University, has been officially approved for establishment.

Jointly built by Peking University's Ordos Energy Research Institute, China University of Petroleum (Beijing), and China University of Geosciences (Beijing), the Key Laboratory is aligned with China’s "dual carbon" strategy and energy security needs. It aims to achieve large-scale and profitable exploration and development of deep CBM in Inner Mongolia. The lab will focus on establishing theories of deep CBM enrichment, reservoir formation models, and evaluation methods, while building a technological system covering drilling, reservoir characterization, and fracturing technologies.

The laboratory will integrate the three institutions’ strengths in research, engineering demonstration, and technology commercialization to fully support the efficient development and utilization of deep CBM in the region. It will also support the construction of a national-level deep CBM exploration and development demonstration base.

As a vital base for China’s energy and strategic resources, Inner Mongolia plays a dual role in transforming the energy structure and advancing green, low-carbon development. Under the national dual carbon strategy, the Key Laboratory will address the region’s need for a low-carbon, sustainable energy economy. It will focus on deep CBM exploration and development, carry out research and technological innovation for green development, form a comprehensive theory and technology system, promote application of research outcomes, and become an internationally influential center for CBM theoretical research, technology innovation, and talent development.
